Pastor James E. Young Sr., an anointed pastor, preacher, and teacher of the gospel, was born on October 1, 1948 in Miami, Florida to the parents of the(late) John and (late) Florence Young. He was educated in the Broward County and the Alachua County School District. After graduation, Pastor Young enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in numerous parts of the world with the latter being Vietnam. He served for 27 years and became Senior Chief Warrant Officer in the latter part of his service.

After some years unsaved and without a spiritual covering, God led Pastor and Sis. Young to unite with the St. Thomas Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida under the leadership of Pastor Ernie L. Murray, Sr. While at St. Thomas, Pastor Young served as a deacon in training and a trustee. Pastor Young was later licensed into the gospel ministry.

In 1989, Pastor Young and Family relocated to Rochester, NY where they joined the Aenon Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor James L. Cherry, Sr. It was at Aenon where Pastor Young was ordained into the gospel ministry. Pastor Young frequently traveled and ministered to other congregations in the local vicinity during this time.

In 1994, Pastor Young moved his ministry to the Holy Trinity Baptist Church where he served as Associate Pastor and Bible Study Coordinator. While at Holy Trinity, Pastor Young introduced new bible literature, 2 bible classes, and lectures such that the bible study ministry grew from 5 to 77 students.

God elevated Pastor Young's ministry further as he was called to Pastor the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Syracuse, NY in November 1996. During his tenure, Pastor Young led in the implementation of a new handicap ramp, budgeting system, purchase of a church van, renovation of the church sanctuary, which included new pews, pulpit area, carpeting, air conditioning, window redecorating, and additional acquisition of church property.

After six and a half years, God led Rev. Young down a new path to organize a new church under the name Gethsemane Baptist Church. The name Gethsemane was an inspired name given to him by God. This new community of faith held their first service on March 9th, 2003 at the Hotel Syracuse with 51 people in attendance. The church was founded under the scripture reference

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thine ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy path"- Proverbs 3:5-6
It was at the hotel that many of our ministries were developed. The membership worked tirelessly for the up building of God's Kingdom and that service to Him was rewarded back to the church. In one year's time God allowed us to purchase the church building on 372 West Matson Avenue which was previously occupied by the St. John the Baptist Armenian Apostolic Church. We officially moved in in April of 2004. With this miracle and blessing, Gethsemane will be able to expand its ministry to reach out to people with the love of Jesus Christ that makes a positive difference.

Pastor Young has earned a diploma in Biblical Studies from Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Rochester, NY and graduated with a BS Degree in Business Management/Economics from Empire State College in Rochester, NY in August 2014 . Pastor Young has been married for 47 years to the lovely Juanita Young and they have two children, James Jr. and Stephanie.
